Thank you for reminding me to slow down and think about the Cs. I have always since I was a young girl (my mom had eight babies in 10 years) connected with new born babies better than with any other age group. I acknowlege them and they tell me what they need. It's just lately that life is getting faster and faster and my head is spinning that I feel I can't hear the babies through the other loud (brain) chatter. Well I am making a new resolution today and off to a postpartum visit tonight. Wish me luck. I've had to take a hiatus this year not for a baby, but for cancer treatment. It's been hard. I look forward to going back again. In my neck of the woods, August and September were extremely difficult birth months for my team of doulas. Lots of babies in NICU, lots of scares. It is interesting to hear you say that too. I am going to be a first time mom and so there is a lot to learn when it comes to having a baby of course. However, I feel that there is a lot of pressure to do the expected things when it comes to baby stuff. My pregnant friends are signing up for all sorts of educational things and are amalgamating piles of ‘stuff’ from the most expensive and technologically advanced strollers to most fashionable merino wool baby clothes… All that is fine but I have found myself somewhat lost in this madness and pressure to learn and acquire the right things.

I am sure that prenatal classes are very useful but I am going to go against the grain. As far as birth, I have started with a firm idea that it must be done in a hospital, I have to read as many book as possible, attend prenatal education classes, and approach birthing as a scary medical procedure. I am a researcher and an analyst in the field of health care after all so this was another project that I had to get serious about.

Luckily, I have remembered that the women in my family neither did any classes nor ever even heard of epidurals. They just had babies…

Having Jacquie as our dula and reading Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth and any other inspiring stories is as much education about birth as I want to get at this point. So I am taking a few steps back and taking a very deep breath. No expensive strollers. No prenatal classes. Instead my husband and are spending more time hiking in the woods with our dog and going on picnics at the beach instead.

I am going to have faith in the knowledge that my body already knows exactly what it needs to know. For everything else, I have Jacquie as our dula and the midwifes in the comfort of our home. I am going to fully put my trust into Nature and my wonderful team of kind, intelligent and experienced women. The hospital with its latest painkillers, medical knowledge and surgical tools are always there if I need them should an emergency arise.

For now, I am just going to relax and have a good time.Irynahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01104725798449391825noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13826682.post-39683314742404822472012-02-16T08:23:59.107-08:002012-02-16T08:23:59.107-08:00This is great! It's always "rush rush rush, get that baby out, rush," and we forget to stop and take in what is happening, and how amazing it is. That is one of the things I have loved about a lot of the doulas I've met. They appreciate life for what it is, in a calm and almost reverent way.Keelytmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11988570653621032375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13826682.post-19492345458879417702012-01-23T13:27:34.506-08:002012-01-23T13:27:34.506-08:00This is a great read ! Too much milk, too fast a let down, and a tongue tie that went undiagnosed for three weeks (leading to mastitis followed by thrush!) led to a very bad beginning. For some reason, we kept going and by about 8 weeks we cracked it - and kept going until he was 18 months! There were many many times (after those 8 weeks) that I really appreciated how much easier breastfeeding was than bottle feeding, and I fed on demand for pretty much the first 6 months. (Crying? Here, have a boob! = problem solved!)

The one thing I would say is that I wish health care people/midwives/etc were more honest about breastfeeding, before the baby arrives. In our classes, we were taught that breastfeeding should never be uncomfortable, and if it is then you are doing something wrong. Then we were shown a video of a 15 minute old baby crawling up to its mother's breast and latching on. The reality of the experience was so very different that I felt I'd been sold a lot of propaganda! Yes, we did get to that point - but it took work. That said, when my daughter was born two years later, she WAS that baby - latched herself on and nursed no problem.

Sorry, that was quite a long comment!!Sew Boredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04737683320833528891noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13826682.post-59253271632064518742011-08-15T13:06:58.187-07:002011-08-15T13:06:58.187-07:00Oh thank you thank you thank you!!!
